I'm really glad you ended up putting this in your show ^_^. You really are a great painter and I hope you keep it up this summer and in school next year!

Hi and thanks for liking my work. May I suggest you consider the following on this work of yours. The figure and negative space are not very separated on the image. I suspect this mostly has to do with the values being similar between the subject and background. I also suggest you always ask yourself where you want your viewer to focus and if every element is absolutely essential to the story you want to tell within the work.

A matter of focus is essential when creating a work. This is somewhat similar to depth of field in photography. The item of primary importance should be the focus and background etc. should be less prominent. This may often be achieved by having less detail in the background images.

For example, the door, the door knob, the lamp, the clock at three and the window and pictures on the wall are rendered with quite a bit of detail, yet Im unsure as to why they are so important and why their details keep grabbing my eye away from the figure.

Hope some of this makes sense to you.

Regards

George

Well I think subconsciencely i picked those three things because in my room they are the three aspects of my life that control me. i am afraid of the dark so the lamp is important to me . i always want to be free from my circumstances so the window to escape. And the clock is my constant worry about how much time i have. I think i need to tone then down or bring everything up to their lvl.

I agree about the depth of the painting being off. I think i rushed too much on the background.

Very cool thoughts. You are in touch with your feelings and that is essential for an artist. Now you need to give it up to the viewer however (your thoughts that is). So perhaps if you think from a cinematic viewpoint it will help with your paintings. How is it you can convey fear, escape and time? If you are afraid than put it in your work. If you need to escape, let me see it. If time is tapping you on the shoulder than I need to see it in your work.

So as you develop your technical skills you should simultaneously develop your artistic communication skills. Cezanne was great for what he wasnt. His competition was for example Gerome. No way, could poor Cezanne ever compete with the Grand Prix winner Gerome. So what did he do? He found his own voice and sang it as loudly as he could. Sing it out girl. Let us hear your own cracked, warped, fearful and so very human voice. Once you can convey this you will be on the road to becoming a great artist.
